Dave’s favorite Day Trip on the Big Island
Kona Coast – Hawi – Polulū Valley - Kohala Highlands – Waimea – Kona Coast
This is a great sampler tour with some activity, lots of sights and even some great food possibilities.
Start by driving up the Kona Coast into Kohala and the town of Hawi (approximately 1 hr drive) where you can grab an organic local coffee and homemade banana bread to start your day. Hawi is full of interesting characters, kitschy shops and galleries. Hawi is also the starting point for a number of great Big Island adventures that you can arrange in advance….zip lining, ATV adventures (https://umaumaexperience.com/ has great ATV fun with an incredible triple-tier waterfall), horseback riding, waterfall hikes (https://www.hawaii-forest.com/ has great options!) or various combinations of the above.
Pololū Valley Lookout
After your adventure, continue to the Pololū Valley lookout (10-15 min) for amazing views of the massive cliffs and picturesque rugged coast. Park and take the short hike (10-15 min down = 20-25 min back up!) to the black sand beach and explore the valley. Or continue on to the next valley - Honokane Nui.
Waimea
Back up the hill, drive back toward Hawi and take the left in Kapauu toward Waimea and drive the beautiful road through the Kohala Highlands to Waimea (30-40 min). You’ll think you’ve been transported to Scotland. Once in Waimea you’ll notice that the temperature has dropped! You’re now at a higher altitude and in the agricultural center of the island known for its Farmer’s Markets (Wed/Sat), massive ranch operations (cowboys included!) and foodie culture. See our restaurant recommendations and grab something to eat.
Head back down the hill to the Kona Coast and watch the temperature climb as you see the lava fields, beaches and ocean unfold on your drive home. Depending on your activity and food stops the day can take as little as half a day right up to a full day.
